The Art of the Slow Safari: Planning Your Safari

In a world that prizes speed, the ultimate luxury is the ability to slow down. Planning a safari can feel like a daunting logistical puzzle – balancing seasons, regions, and bush-plane transfers. But at Africa Eco Expeditions, we believe the planning stage shouldn’t be a chore; it should be the first step in your immersion.
To truly experience the Lobo Valley, one must move away from the “checklist” mentality. We specialize in the Slow Safari: an exclusive, unhurried approach that prioritizes depth of connection over the number of sightings. Here is how to curate your journey into the wild.

Timing Your Escape: The Rhythm of the Valley

Our seasons aren’t just about weather; they are about the “texture” of the bush

  • High SeasonJune – Nov 15The Great Migration: Millions of wildebeest and zebra dominate the landscape without the masses found in Kogatende. Dry weather and low grass make for dramatic, easy-to-spot predator action.
  • Green SeasonNov 16 – MayThe Emerald Valley: The “short” and “long” rains transform the valley into a lush paradise. Expect dramatic skies, fat, healthy resident lions, elephants, and migratory birds without the crowds.Note: While we are ideally positioned to witness the Great Migration when the herds move through the Lobo Valley, we are also located 83 km from the Mara River. This is intentional. It allows you to witness the power of the herds in the Valley and also a river crossing while retreating to the exclusivity of Lobo, far from the “safari traffic” and chaos of the river crossings.

The Luxury of the “Slow Safari”

We recommend a minimum stay of 3-4 nights at our camp and other camps should you choose to visit areas. If you are interested in photography, we recommend at least 5 nights. This slow pace allows you to truly decompress. On a slow safari, luxury is redefined through three pillars:

  • The Luxury of Space: In the Lobo Valley, you often feel like the only people on Earth. We prioritize “solo sightings,” where your vehicle is the only one at a scene, allowing for an intimate, silent connection with wildlife.
  • The Luxury of Time: Stay at the waterhole for another hour just to watch an elephant family interact. Sip a sundowner under a pastel sky because there is no rush to get back.
  • The Luxury of Simplicity: The smell of morning coffee in the crisp air, lantern-lit dinners under a canopy of stars, and the genuine friendships formed with our local hosts.

The Journey: Arriving in the Wild

International Arrivals

The closest international airport is Kilimanjaro. Depending on flight arrival time, you may need to overnight in Arusha and start your safari the next day.

Getting to Lobo Valley is part of the story. Whether you prefer to soar over the Serengeti or traverse its rugged terrain, we offer two distinct ways to begin your escape.

  • The Bush Flight (Recommended): For those prioritizing the luxury of time, a scheduled bush flight is the gold standard. You’ll bypass the long, dusty transit roads and trade hours of bumpy driving for a breathtaking 50-minute aerial tour of the plains. You’ll touch down at the Lobo Airstrip refreshed and ready to begin your safari the moment you land. Your private guide will meet you at the airstrip in a custom game-viewing vehicle—complete with a chilled cooler box—beginning your safari from the moment your feet touch the red earth.
  • The Overland Expedition: For the adventurous spirit, we offer private safari vehicles and expert guides for a drive-in journey from Arusha. This route allows you to explore the “hidden” gems of the northern circuit, such as the surreal landscapes of Lake Natron or the untouched wilderness of the Eastern Serengeti. These areas are significantly less crowded, offering a raw, exclusive look at the backcountry before you reach our camp.

Packing for the Bush: Minimalist & Mindful

Because we provide professional laundry services in camp, “less is best.”

The Bag

  • Use soft-sided luggage only (max 15–20kg). These are essential for the small plane cargo pods.

The Palette

  • Stick to neutrals—khaki, beige, olive, and tan. These colors keep you cool, camouflage you during walking safaris, and don’t attract insects.

The Layers

  • The desert climate swings from chilly dawns to hot afternoons. Pack a fleece or windbreaker alongside your lightweight cotton shirts.

The Essentials

  • High-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a quality pair of binoculars.

Important Note: Tanzania has a strict ban on plastic bags. Please ensure your toiletries and packing cubes are reusable fabric or eco-friendly alternatives.

Health & Heart

Lobo Valley is located in a malaria-free zone; however, we always recommend consulting your doctor regarding vaccinations.

  • Yellow Fever: Only required if you are traveling from or transiting through (for more than 12 hours) a high-risk country.

Community: By choosing our locally owned and managed camp, your stay directly funds conservation and supports the local communities that have called this land home for generations.

My Favorite Secret: Why I Love the Green Season in Lobo Valley

While much of the world is shivering under snow and frost, our corner of the Serengeti is waking up in a vibrant explosion of life. To many, this is the "Green Season" (December through May), but to me, it’s the most soulful time to be in the bush. If you’re looking for a holiday escape that prioritizes connection over "ticking boxes," this is your sanctuary.

The Art of the Slow Safari: Why “Staying Put” is the Ultimate Luxury

The Art of the Slow Safari: Why “Staying Put” is the Ultimate Luxury

In the world of African travel, there is a common trap: the "Checklist Chase." It’s the frantic urge to see everything in short period, packing and unpacking every 48 hours, and spending more time staring at the back of a driver’s head than at the wildlife. By the third day of a “circuit" safari, you aren't a traveler anymore; you’re a professional passenger. You’re dusty, exhausted, and likely part of a "vehicle scrum"—that frantic cluster of twenty to 50+ Land Cruisers jostling for a glimpse of a big cat likely 800 meters away. But there is another way. It’s called the Slow Safari, and it’s a total game-changer.

Through Small Eyes: The Magic of a Family Safari with Africa Eco Expeditions Camp in the Lobo Valley of the Serengeti

Stepping into the vast wilderness of Africa, one can’t help but be captivated by its raw beauty. But as camp owners, we’ve learned that there isn’t just one “wilderness”—there are as many versions of it as there are guests who walk through our canvas doors. We have the privilege of witnessing nature’s full arc: the clumsy first steps of a newborn giraffe, the rise of a dominant lion, and the quiet passing of the seasons written in the color of the grass. But perhaps our favorite way to see the Serengeti is through the wonder-filled eyes of a child.
